Neal Walde  |  Ceramic

I am drawn to ceramics by the interaction between clay and fire and a desire to create objects that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Most of my work is wheel thrown and functional. For me, getting a lid to fit perfectly or trimming a foot that blends well with a pot’s proportions is very satisfying. I am striving to accomplish balance and clarity of form within the context of the piece. My intent is to create pots that will be used by someone who appreciates beautiful objects that also work well.  My work is inspired by folk art traditions, both from the Mingei (Japanese folk art) tradition and the simple, traditional style of many Minnesota potters whose work I admire. I hope that my style conveys simplicity and honesty and that appreciation for my pots grows with repeated use.
