Carving Out is a collection of works representing where I have been, where I am now, and where I am going. Fueled by the intense energy thus far of 2020, these prints hopefully invite the viewer to call back to simpler notions and small joys; like finding a robotic looking grasshopper in the sun, blooming flowers, the triumphs of gardening, majestic animals, music, and navigating life while trying to hold these things close. Here I utilize both reduction cut and multiple block printmaking methods to build images through contrasting elements coming together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of their parts. These hand carved works were printed on a 1961 Vandercook Universal III Power Test Press with all archival oil based inks on acid free archival papers to provide decades of enjoyment.

Jon was born and raised in Buffalo, NY until moving to Phoenix, AZ in 2007 with his wife Elizabeth. He began printmaking in 2009 and found his footing within the concert world. After joining forces with Prescott based, and now nationally known, band Spafford, he really hit his stride. Being free to express himself with the blessing of the band, he has now created over 100 concert print editions for Spafford since 2014 as well as managing “all things posters” in regards to commissioning different artists to provide posters and the logistics of touring. Having had the gracious opportunity to work with bands like Spafford, The Wood Brothers, and Trey Anastasio Band, he looks forward to the time when concerts can safely return. When not designing, carving, or printing, Jon enjoys seeing live music with friends around the country and spending time at home with his wife and two daughters, Alice and Eloise, and cat Reuben.
